Short One: Interview Assigment

Assignment for Monday, Feb 6:

Interview an older family member, preferably a grandparent or parent, about 3 events in their life.

Condition: The three key events must revolve around their personal reaction or experience to collective event or memory. This may or may not include war.

Remember: If your relative is comfortable discussing an event like war, which may include September 11, 2001, it’s your job to respectfully ask questions. Do not antagonize your relative’s generosity by being hasty or indifferent to their responses.
Let your intuition guide you.

Write-up: Your questions should give you the opportunity to produce at least one page typed of paragraph-style notes and description—at least one typed sandwich-sized paragraph per event. In order to focus on the personal aspect of the events, try to ask for as specific details as possible: colors, places, names. If they would prefer to discuss three different moments of one large event, like World War II, this is fine. Just remember to focus on what they were doing then, who they were.

Be sure to ask if they’d share how the event changed for them through time.
How has time affected their memories?

You should bring your working notes to class Monday, February 6th.
